About MountRides

A mountain bike rides only as well as it is set up. The same frame is transformed by a few psi in the tires, a few clicks and pumps of the suspension, and the right gear range for your trails — and undone by getting any of them wrong. Most of that setup comes down to small calculations riders do in the workshop or the trailhead car park: what pressure for my weight and tires, how much sag, how many chain links, which spokes for this wheel. None of it is hard maths, but doing it by feel, over and over, is exactly where a good bike ends up mediocre. MountRides was built to do that maths for you so you can spend the time riding.

The site is a set of small, single-purpose calculators, each aimed at one real setup question. The MTB Tire Pressure Calculator turns your weight, tire width, and terrain into a front and rear pressure. The Gear Ratio Calculator converts a chainring, cog, and wheel into gear inches, development, and speed so you can compare gearing across wheel sizes. The Suspension Sag Calculator gives the exact millimetres of sag to set on your fork and shock. The Spoke Length Calculator solves the wheelbuilding triangle for both sides of a dished wheel. The Chain Length Calculator sizes a chain from your chainstay and gearing. And the Wheel Size Convertercompares 26″, 27.5″, and 29″ wheels on real rollout and effective gearing.

Beyond the calculators, the blog and learn section cover gear and kit, bike setup and tuning, trail skills, and maintenance, along with the reasoning behind the numbers the tools produce. The Bike & Trail Museum is a browsable collection of the sport, the history of the bicycle, the anatomy of the machine, and the riders and races that shaped off-road cycling, with every entry, image, and fact drawn from Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.

A few things worth stating plainly. MountRides is an independent site, not a bike shop, a component manufacturer, or a coaching service, and it is not affiliated with any brand. It is supported by advertising, which is how the tools stay free with no account required. Every result — a pressure, a sag figure, a spoke length, a chain length — is a general starting point built on the numbers you enter and on standard formulas, not a manufacturer specification. Components have their own pressure, torque, and service limits, so treat anything safety-related as a starting point and confirm it against your fork, tire, rim, and frame makers’ guidance.
